@j And people wonder why I don't use Firefox.

@j @alyx mozilla might get wrapped up in the google antitrust suit now

@s8n@posting.lolicon.rocks @j@shitposter.world @alyx@gameliberty.club is that logo a premature surrender flag? Looks like the grifters running it already know they're next.

@s8n @alyx oh they already have. 80% of their revenue comes from having Google as the default search engine in Firefox and a judge has already ruled that is going to be ending. IIRC Mozilla has about 8 months before that runs out.
@j @alyx @s8n mozilla employees are gonna be forced to put the fries in the bag
@PurpCat @alyx @s8n Google told the judge it doesn't think they have to sell Chrome. They REALLY don't want to give up Chrome.
@j @PurpCat @alyx honestly I might go back to work on chrome again if they actually are forced to spin it off. I'm one of the engineers who knows their autotest infrastructure the best in the world

@j @PurpCat @alyx @s8n I'll offer them a deal. Keep chrome, but give up YouTube

@j @PurpCat @alyx @beardalaxy yeah youtube is destroyed, it's already in the irrecoverable slide. Wocjicki killed it dead

@j @PurpCat @alyx @s8n nobody wants YouTube, but everyone wants to be YouTube and as long as YouTube exists, that can't happen

@j @PurpCat @beardalaxy @s8n
Nobody has the resources to keep YouTube going. Doesn't help that the platform is a mess. Everybody complains how much disk space the video content uploaded to YouTube costs, but at the same time YT offers a shitload of codecs and encode qualities for video and audio.

Streaming on YT is probably a disaster for them. Everything gets re-encoded several times over. You get one realtime transcode to h264 during streaming, and then once finished it gets reencoded again to h264, then to vp9, and maybe even av1. With resolutions from 1080p down to 144p.
YouTube's inefficiency drives me up the walls every time I think about it. If you want to see me rage, just mention "YouTube codecs". Heck, just mention YouTube...

@j @alyx @s8n what happens if Trump admin breaks search/adsense off of Alphabet?

@JustinCody @j @alyx search can't be broken off alphabet, it's impossible to monetize on its own. Also it's possible google search has already been destroyed. Right now the only reason it's hanging on is because of the massive compute resources Google has in tons of datacenters that nobody else can replicate.

@s8n @alyx @j but it can be

Googles other entities like YouTube will hate it at first since they can't siphon off of it parasitically but that will put competition more in play

@JustinCody @alyx @j do you have some kind of inside information about the operations and monetization of google search that I, as a Google engineer for 10 years, do not have, and which affords you the information and belief you require to disagree with me?

You know it's operating costs and you know the hardware and facilities that it takes to run that equipment? You're familiar with the software? You have had root on index machines?

@s8n @alyx @j nope, given the anti trust pursuit currently and the complaints about monopolization they are subject to being treated as Bell was.

It's not a for sure thing, but a likely outcome given the current track.

Could go nowhere ofc, but I give it 50/50 at the moment and the market might enjoy another IPO like when GE Capitol was shed to become Synchrony

@JustinCody @alyx @j google search has no independent revenue stream. It can't be separated. It can be carved off with another segment of the company but it is not a viable standalone business. Cutting it off would just be deleting it.

Don't disagree with statements like that from a position of ignorance. If you don't know what you're talking about, then NO. You do NOT disagree. You do not even have the basis from which to disagree

@s8n @alyx @j I guess you missed the part where I included adsense in the initial post. Unless.you think advertising doesn't generate revenue...

@JustinCody @alyx @j oh you found some new information and now you know enough about this to argue?

No you fucking didn't, you're still acting insanely stupid.

You are not qualified on this topic, you know I am qualified on this topic, and you're still arguing with me like you know what you're talking about when you know for 100% certain that you don't.

Adsense only works because buying ads on it is cross-platform to youtube, search, the Play store, and all the other connected properties. The value of search without the ecosystem is NEGATIVE. It LOSES MONEY.

Do you understand what I am telling you?

Do you understand not to have opinions about topics you have absolutely no knowledge of?

@s8n @alyx @j I didn't introduce any new information. You're just foaming now. Relax pal. Seems like I am over the target given your reaction.

@JustinCody @alyx @j what the fuck is this link supposed to prove? That an antitrust lawsuit is in-progress? Get the fuck out of my feed and never come back
@JustinCody @alyx @j look, I don't know how else to explain this. You seem to be terminally retarded. Here's the bullet point list:

-Search can't exist without the Alphabet ecosystem, it loses money
-Search would lose money even if AdSense were broken off with it
-If AdSense were broken off of Google, the rest of Google would die

And the big one:

-Antitrust lawsuits do not ever and have never cut off a segment of a company just to shut it down completely. Antitrust suits only result in a fragmenting of companies into smaller companies. The smaller companies that result have never been insolvent and you would have to be INSANELY STUPID to think that outcome will result.

@s8n @JustinCody @j
Question: my general understanding was that pretty much every project/site under Alphabet isn't profitable on its own, and that the entire thing only stays afloat because AdSense can make money from the collective data you share with the entire ecosystem as a whole. Fragment the ecosystem, and the data that can be collected becomes fragmented and worth less to advertisers.

So is there any part of Alphabet that could be chopped off as a result of an antitrust lawsuit? (without dooming it or Alphabet to financial collapse).

@alyx @s8n @j you would have to start making profitable business decisions for other units.

Surprisingly, shareholders haven't caught onto this yet.

Just because it's your major income source doesn't mean you get exempted from monopolistic behavior/ anticompetition sanctions, and being broken up.

Doesn't mean they lose all the revenue as they can contract with adsense as a third party.

@JustinCody @alyx @j "just" invent a revenue stream out of nothing from whole cloth he says

@s8n @alyx @j yeah it's called a business.

Let's take all that experience and compete with AWS. Rumble is doing that on a limited scale.

Google Workspace monetize that. Now do that with every or as many product lines as possible.

So many product lines get shutdown due to not generating revenue.

Businesses fail all the time. There is no right to exist. What you see is a tremendous misallocation of capital. Loss leading is a brute force strategy and not particularly efficient.

@alyx @s8n @j the advantage for everyone else in that is Google can't leverage anti competition tactics and everyone else can get the same treatment
