The title makes it sounds a bit harsher than I suspect it was in reality, maybe a bit more tough love than I would practice, but yeah, teaching your child simple life skills like this is the definition of good parenting. Can't remember what age I learned how to open such a can (we didn't even have can openers, we needed to open them with knives if we wanted to) but it was certainly an important lesson my brother taught me, and I don't think I was that much older.

That's arguably some form of threat/blackmail. And yet Gab was the big baddy.

People keep saying Gab is this big pool of bigotry, and yet during this "incident" the true bigots were the ones that put pressure on other moderators to ban or defederate from Gab, or on app developers to IP ban the site. That's literal active discrimination, that's what being a bigot implies, that you do everything in your power to hurt someone, even when they have no way of influencing your life. The bigots of American slavery days weren't satisfied with just having a black slave, they were outraged at even the thought of a black person being free, and demanded all of them be treated as animals.

Gab didn't went out of it's way to tell other instances how they should treat LGBT people or minorities or people of certain political or religious ideologies. And for most part, they were either indifferent or happy that certain instances chose to defederate with them ("less degenerates" is how they usually phrased it).
But certain Mastodon moderators did see fit to destroy Gab for their political ideologies. Not so they could keep their users safe, that could have been easily done with just a instance suspension, but because they are intolerant and bigoted towards people of other political views.

Yeah, I had mine really early too. Used it a while, got bored cause it was too empty and, as you say, single-minded. When I heard about the federating news, I thought: maybe there's finally some diversity and more interesting things in general. And this kinda brought me back to try Gab again. Didn't think at the time that I would end up abandoning Gab again for another instance. Not that I really understood what instances were at that time.

Gab kinda failed to take off in any significant way. Mostly because it was quickly turned into a scapegoat and boogeyman by certain demographics. So Parler is the next attempt at being the new Twitter, since Gab didn't succeed. I'm guessing that as long as one of these alternatives doesn't manage to gain mainstream status on par with Twitter, new ones will keep appearing.

I've managed to stay away from fedi for a while, and since I don't make a habit in searching for Gab stuff, I didn't notice.

My mixed feelings stem from the fact that the reason why I discovered fedi was that I had a Gab account when they federated. While I was not actively using it at the time, when I heard they federated, I decided to check things out for a while. See what this Fediverse business was all about. Eventually I moved to other instances.

As for why they federated, the answer to that is very simple. Their phone apps got thrown out of both Apple and Android ecosystems, so they wanted to piggy-back on the fediverse apps available. But we know how well that turned out, so I guess it wasn't worth it for them anymore to continue.

From how I understand them, "refrain" basically has an implied "yourself" in it. You can say "Refrain from doing X", and it's understood that I'm saying you need to stop doing X.
Whereas "restrain" needs that "yourself" to be specified so it can carry the same meaning, so it would be "Restrain yourself from doing X".
Of course, you can also restrain someone else. For instance "Bob restrained Mary" makes sense. While "Bob refrained Mary" not so much.
