One problem might be that you need to do new_item->token = *data

So you're initializing the item_t new_item, and giving it memory, but you're not initializing the Token_t token within it and expect it to directly pass to it a different memory allocation?

I'll laugh my ass of if/when an alternative, carbon-neutral, bio-fuel becomes available, and electric cars become obsolete.

And if you think electric cars can't become obsolete, remember that a good bio-fuel could make any gas guzzler eco friendly. Meanwhile, there's no foreseeable technology that makes lithium mining less ecologically devastating.
