Okay I believe it is the inverter board, maybe the ribbon cable came loose, or something. I squeezed below the screen where the board is and it works now. So that is a relief because if it breaks for good that's way easier to fix than a CCFL tube...

Oh so this is why my CF adaptor and several other PC Cards wouldn't work I am guessing. I know PC Card is super old and the drivers were buggy, but it just strikes me as stupid that you flat out just can't use a once-ubiquitous three-decade old interface on the kernel known as Linux.

Tried my ThinkPad T60p and it seems like the backlight is working again so maybe it was a fluke when it wasn't working all those months ago... maybe it is "so back bros" as they say
