all we can tell from that statistic is that men are less than half as likely to report a suicide attempt than women are. for every ten women there are 6 men that report a suicide attempt. personally i don't think a male suicide rate of nearly 4x more really accounts for that.

especially because it looks like men are only nearly twice as likely to use firearms and women nearly four times as likely to use pills, as far as deaths go. suffocation is about the same. that just doesn't quite add up to your theory of women attempting more often just because they are half as less likely to use guns.

i realize this is anecdotal, but i will say that out of all of the people i know who have attempted suicide, i only know one male who reported it and that's because he actually got taken to the hospital while overdosing. some friends tried hanging and didn't rig it well enough so the rope snapped. one of them tried the car fumes trick but someone saved him before he passed out. myself and some other friends tried pills and in my case at least, i had a seizure and luckily recovered afterward without going to the hospital (the goal was to trigger a seizure and die from the seizure because i thought nobody was home at the time).

i only know two women that have attempted suicide. one was my mom and i'm honestly not sure of the details. the other attempted three times whereas all of the guys i know have only attempted once. every time it was reported and she would stay in the mental hospital for a few weeks. she's thankfully doing well now from what i've heard.

i'm of the opinion that the attempt rate is at the VERY least the same for men and women but since men choose firearms more often they die more often. from my own personal experience it seems like men attempt often but are less likely to ever report it.

it's not exactly a contest though. mental illness is obviously a huge fucking problem that's only getting worse and worse with the only treatment being more pills that make you feel like shit and dumbass youtubers promoting predatory online "therapists."

@prouddegenerate @carlosruzu @matana @Melon me? yeah my attempt was almost a decade ago. lots of reasons for it, none of which exist anymore because i did something about it even though it was buttfuck hard and still continues to be a little bit but i'd rather have a harder life than a miserable one where i'm not genuine and keeping toxins around because they're comforting.
