If you actually read Shakespeare's plays, you can more-or-less stuff them into two categories: politically correct sucking up to the powers that be, and sensationalist horseshit to please the masses. Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear and Hamlet all fall into that latter category.

Tom Stoppard was pretty much on point in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, when he had his Player King character peg it as Love, Blood and Rhetoric.
