i still think a sliding scale works best, which allows for minors to consent to their peers but not adults/older adults (for instance in utah it's 14-18, 16-22, 18+). i feel like there could be another bracket of like 12-14 or something too but in actuality it's not needed because that kind of shit never gets prosecuted anyway. and there are romeo/juliet laws too (10 years in utah which is pretty high tbh, the highest in the country).

yeah but it _is_ explicitly illegal in a lot of US states and I think I'm pretty ok with that
whereas romeo and juliet laws criminalize other situations that, while often a bit gross, probably shouldn't land anyone in jail imo
the states with these laws usually also have romeo and juliet provisions in addition fwiw. I don't remember WA specifically but something like 12-16 age range is usually subject to increasingly large age gaps being permitted. so something like 15/17 being legal but 15/19 being illegal that sort of thing
