@sjw @shebang depends on where we're talking about.

shit places like washington have an AOC of 21. people really are retarded over there i guess.

i still think a sliding scale works best, which allows for minors to consent to their peers but not adults/older adults (for instance in utah it's 14-18, 16-22, 18+). i feel like there could be another bracket of like 12-14 or something too but in actuality it's not needed because that kind of shit never gets prosecuted anyway. and there are romeo/juliet laws too (10 years in utah which is pretty high tbh, the highest in the country).

@beardalaxy @beardalaxy @shebang wait, really? So you're considered an adult yet still not old enough for adult activities? That's quite the mental gymnastics. That's expected for a place like Washington tho.

@sjw @shebang huh that must have changed recently, it's 16 now apparently.

@beardalaxy @beardalaxy @sjw @shebang it was always 16 there but like a few other states it isn't absolute. there are provisions that apply to people like teachers and legal guardians until 21. but as long as you're a total stranger it's 16

@roboneko @sjw @shebang interesting. Still kinda lame, Romeo & Juliet laws would solve that anyway.

@beardalaxy @beardalaxy @sjw @shebang I prefer this approach since 16 seems fine to me but "father rails stepdaughter who can't legally move out" seems wrong. or 22 with 17 kind of weird imo but whatever :asuna_shock: wait you're a student teacher at her highschool?!

@roboneko @sjw @shebang the former is still rape if it's unwanted. The latter may not be illegal but it is probably enough to ruin your chances at becoming a teacher. :meru_shrug:

@beardalaxy @beardalaxy @sjw @shebang

> The latter may not be illegal

yeah but it _is_ explicitly illegal in a lot of US states and I think I'm pretty ok with that :cirno_heh: whereas romeo and juliet laws criminalize other situations that, while often a bit gross, probably shouldn't land anyone in jail imo

the states with these laws usually also have romeo and juliet provisions in addition fwiw. I don't remember WA specifically but something like 12-16 age range is usually subject to increasingly large age gaps being permitted. so something like 15/17 being legal but 15/19 being illegal that sort of thing

> the former is still rape if it's unwanted

> if it's unwanted

that's the entire problem such laws seek to address. if grooming is recognized as a BadThing™ then how is the situation where someone "consents" to someone with that sort of power over them significantly different? (obligatory 💢💢 correction 💢 joke)
