Alright I need some advice with my game.

There are plenty of doors that don't have anything behind them. Most doors aren't like this, but for the ones that are I don't want to put just a blank room behind them because it's a waste of my time and the players'.

So right now, the doors like this just display a message that says "It would be pointless to enter here." I would like, however, to visibly display this so that players don't even have to click the doors. It would make it immediately noticeable if a door cannot be opened.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could change visually? I don't want it to be glaring, like a big red X on the door or something that would be annoying, but I still want it to be noticeable. Maybe a small red X, or making the door a slightly different color or something.

@beardalaxy I hope that game is going to be free software.

Make the doors glow green, with a message of "proprietary software lies beyond" if the player tries to open it maybe?

@Suiseiseki it's free (donation ware) but not Foss. I use a good amount of paid plug-ins and I'm using a proprietary engine. I was not thinking about Foss stuff 7 years ago. My next project won't be either but I'm looking into godot for the future so I can at least attempt to move a little more into that sphere.

That being said, if anyone wants to decrypt it, it's not hard. I don't really mind what anyone does with the game or any of the assets as long as they're not selling them. Just keep in mind that the original rights of the plug in developers still remain intact.

@beardalaxy >it's free
>but not Foss
Looking good so far.
>I'm using a proprietary engine
¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿

Please cease the degenerate act of using free to mean gratis.
Proprietary and free are complete opposites.

The word "free" has nothing to do with price no matter how many wrong people use it wrongly.

>I don't really mind what anyone does with the game or any of the assets
>as long as they're not selling them.
But you do care, as you wish to tyrannically restrict the freedom of the users?

>the original rights of the plug in developers still remain intact.
You mean the original restrictions?

@beardalaxy Something I’d picked up on in video games when I was younger was that doors which weren’t intractable were totally flat, just a part of the texture on the wall. All the intractable ones had some geometry to them be it a door frame, hinges, or a knob. Not much help at long distances but up close it’s something you notice whether subconsciously or not. Of course this assumes the art style can tolerate flat doors.

@Coyote it is a 2d, sprite-based game so can't do that unfortunately.

@beardalaxy @beardalaxy It depends what kind of game it is. Assuming its an RPG you could just have a few NPCs inside that just mention lore, background about the world or area they're in or just random small talk that could be funny.
>So right now, the doors like this just display a message that says "It would be pointless to enter here." I would like, however, to visibly display this so that players don't even have to click the doors. It would make it immediately noticeable if a door cannot be opened.
A method would be to make the doors or house have a lower quality or specific texture or colour like you mentioned that signifies the door is un-openable. This also depends on the art direction of the game as well so that it doesn't stick out more than it needs to.
