I almost feel like this has actually been eroding my friendships over the last 4 or 5 years. Everyone always wants to play the new hot game that is out, I'll try it and not really be into it too much and they'll keep playing it with people from work or whatever. I keep trying to ask if they want to play games with me that I enjoy, even ones we used to play together, but it never happens :P It's more or less gotten to the point where I don't even try out most new games anymore since I know I'll probably play them twice, think they're just okay, and then within the next month something else new comes out that everyone switches to anyway. My friends I've had for over a decade are now better friends with people they've known for like 3 or 4 years than they are with me. I know people change and friend groups change and stuff, it's part of life, but having nobody IRL that enjoys the same stuff as you kinda sucks. I don't even try to be a hipster or anything. I'm not trying to be actively against popular stuff. I don't even think things being popular is why I stay away from them. I think my tastes just often REALLY don't align with any larger community.

@beardalaxy This is why I wasn't really able to socialize in college, along with not wanting to use Discord.

@xianc78 yeah, it's really weird when everyone is into something but you're not, and there's actually nobody that is into what you are around. or, they might be, but just not as much as whatever the "current thing" is.

i think a small issue is that a lot of people want to be enveloped in the social zeitgeist of it all, and this is something my brother actually brought up with me as a reason to why he watched all the marvel movies up to endgame despite them being kind of mediocre. not a lot of people think "oh, i can just play this game later since it's always gonna' be around." they want to do it NOW so that they can be a part of a cultural happening. i really don't get that way, and i realized that pretty fast in high school when i had my own money and i made lots of poor purchases because everyone else was doing it. i just go for things i like these days, more or less, and that tends to not align so closely with whatever is popping off at the current moment.

daryl in this video talks about how he literally never played among us. i haven't either lol, not once. never played fall guys. never played palworld. and i likely never will play any of these games. for me it's not because they're popular, it's because i know i won't enjoy them for very long. but at least i'll still pop into one of these every now and then to play something with my friends.... which is a courtesy i can't say they have given me for years now, even with a game they don't have to buy. they just have to play it for a bit with me but that's too much i guess, because they'd rather play the finals or lethal company or palworld or helldivers with their work buddies than spend a few hours on the weekend playing rock band or smash with me.

@xianc78 i'm not even saying that people do this on purpose btw, it's just how it is.
