while everyone is busy shoving their own dick up their ass for their five seconds of pleasure before their cock prices plummet, valve is actually releasing and improving features. you love to see it.

steam families are now way easier to set up and let you play games even if someone in your family is accessing one of yours. massive steam W. i don't think i've ever seen digital game sharing be this easy.

@berkberkman @beardalaxy I dunno, these seems pointless. What they should have instead is an easy install of their Steam Deck distro for computers instead. I don't know if they have that already. There you go, a Steam Machine :shrugz:
@berkberkman @beardalaxy and I mean, the Steam Deck supports wireless controllers and USB-C hubs to have audio and video out, you know

@coolboymew @berkberkman Digital Foundry was actually just talking about Valve making a Steam Machine sort of thing again but themselves. Not speculating, just musing. In the wake of the PS5 Pro announcement, if consoles are going to keep getting more expensive it starts turning more people over to PC gaming and if Valve can make a beefier Steam Deck that's just one of these mini PCs that can fully function as a console while also selling it for less or the same price as whatever is coming out, there's probably a market for that.

@berkberkman @coolboymew i think the idea is that since valve has already done REALLY well with the steam deck, they might be able to knock it out of the park with a machine that's meant to go in the living room too.

@berkberkman @beardalaxy once again, that's just a fucking PC with Windows/Linux on it, and will probably be more expensive than it ought to be
A used dell optiplex micro can run most PS2 games, and that'll only run you around $100.00.
@coolboymew @beardalaxy @berkberkman The point of the steam machine was to mock console peasants, showing that every single argument they make about why their shitty slavebox is better than a PC is just straight bullshit.
Unsurprisingly, it didn't really change anything, but it's still more than Razer ever did.

The controller needs work, it's still worlds better than any other controller has been but it's only the first step in making them actually good.
Also last I heard it was tied up in legal trouble over some other company that was developing a controller with back buttons, but by their own admission they hadn't released anything that could have been used to steal it at the time that Valve announced their design.
@Zergling_man @berkberkman @beardalaxy What was Steam Machines even running? Also Linux? Weren't they years before proton got really good?

>2015
>Steam OS

Yeah, no wonder they weren't too hot on the market
@coolboymew @beardalaxy @berkberkman They were running steamos 1/2, based on debian. The deck runs steamos3 which has been rebuilt on arch, and when the fuck are they going to release it
@Zergling_man @berkberkman @beardalaxy ahhh, is that why I previously thought SteamOS on the deck was Debian
@coolboymew @beardalaxy @berkberkman They may have been running debian in the very early stages; I didn't pay any attention then.
Valve did a TREMENDOUS job pushing Linux in the gaming world, folks! They ported ALL their games to Linux because of the DISASTER that was Windows 8. Steam Machines? Yes, they were running Linux! Steam OS was ahead of its time, like a fine wine, it needed to age! Proton wasn't top-notch back then, but look at it now! MAGNIFICENT work by Valve to keep pushing, make gaming GREAT for everyone! 🎮🐧 #Innovation #GamingRevolution

@coolboymew @berkberkman @Zergling_man as far as I remember, when they first came out they were actually running Windows and I actually have one of those early ones, little guy is still going and I love him. Then they turned into using Steam OS a few years later, never got one of those.

@beardalaxy @berkberkman whhhhy the fuck would anyone need a Steam machine? Again, just have an easily installable distro of it, there, boom, Steam Machine. It's utterly pointless otherwise and basically something you'd sell to the biggest of idiots and can't do's and that's it
@coolboymew @berkberkman @beardalaxy The Steam Deck justwerks™. You can try the third party efforts of porting the Steam Deck OS to generic PCs, they tend to be stuck with jank and broken features, I can understand Valve not wanting to imply first party support for a wider ecosystem they don't want to support to that standard.
@birdulon @beardalaxy @coolboymew "Just werks" seem to be uncommon for just about every OEM computer company, so I don't blame Valve for not making any stuff with Dell, HP, Acer, ASUS, or any others.
@berkberkman @beardalaxy @coolboymew The amount of times I've seen someone say
>"yeah you can run Batocera (or whatever) on this Rog Ally clone and it's basically a way better steam deck"
<"oh cool, does suspend work?"
>"outside of games yeah"
<"not in games?"
>"why would I want to suspend a game?"
@hakui @berkberkman @beardalaxy @coolboymew "I exclusively play my handheld gaming console in 2 hour bursts tethered to a wall"
@berkberkman @beardalaxy @birdulon it's arch and modern linux, it should generally just work in most computers. Even less issues if desktop
@coolboymew @berkberkman @beardalaxy I thought so too before I looked into it with the actual intent to install it on a very similar AMD handheld
@berkberkman @beardalaxy Steam Deck Controller is overdue, maybe the back buttons patent nonsense was circumvented with "handheld consoles are sufficiently different to standalone game controllers".

Strix Halo would be a good SoC for a 2025 Steam Machine, no idea if Valve will bother though.

@mischievoustomato i've used the previous version of it in the past, but it was hard just because if the account sharing it started playing a game you'd get kicked out. now it'll only do that if it's the same game which is super nice. i can play my brother's game while he's playing something else and vice versa. pretty nice.

@beardalaxy
This is, why I don't feel bad for simping for Valve. Because they do go out of their way to offer an actual service, instead of just a barebones shop.
