Why are people so upset for Shrek 5? That little teaser was fucking hilarious. Sometimes I think people take things a little tooooo seriously.

@beardalaxy there was no need for Shrek movies after the second one

@tomie that's true, but i'll take some funny moments here and there. it's been a while since i actually laughed out loud at a movie trailer.

@beardalaxy there's already a theory that Shrek's daughter is trans

@tomie if that's true then it's retarded but I hope it's just a relatively normal funny movie

I recently rewatched the Shrek movies and in addition to the correct (frankly, final) opinion that there wasn't a need for them after Shrek 2, the series won't keep up well with modern children's movie tendencies. Shrek started at a time when people still had kids and families, and the default thing for men to do was get married and grow up.

This sounds retarded, but the entire series from 1-4 was a representation of various parts of a man's life:
- Shrek lives in a stinky, filthy bachelor crib before he's interrupted by the outside world and finds love.
- Shrek struggles to make his love work while meeting his girlfriend's family. In the end he gets married.
- Shrek struggles with family life and kids, and daydreams about his younger days while getting stuck in a routine. In the end he realizes his family is a source of strength.
- Shrek fantasizes about the different paths his life has taken, signing away his soul to the devil for a chance to relive his bachelor life with the benefits of hindsight.

There is nowhere for him to go. His story arc has reached its conclusion and the rightful thing is for a new generation to take over, in which case it wouldn't be called Shrek 5.

Did you see Toy Story 4? There's a film that had its roots and core entirely rewritten to be millennial wankery about literally abandoning your children to chase past romances as though time and space were all contrived just for you. I don't want to see that happen to Shrek. Make something new.

@Hephaestic
That about sums it up for me. Shrek is a told story that doesn't need any more stories. It's Disney sequel territory, everything is a little less magical, it's a little less fun, it's obvious a little less love went into it, and it's mostly there to squeeze another dollar out of a property.

I'm not saying Shrek 5 is going to be bad, but I am saying Shrek looks a little tired.

What's funny is that, pop culture references aside, the movies did continue to get grander and explore new things with each entry. The first movie was a buddy comedy that could have almost entirely been done in live action, but even by the time of Shrek 2 the animators were using much more dynamic camera angles. The Holding Out For A Hero scene at the end was and still is, no exaggeration, a generational thing for kids who watched these movies growing up.

There won't be anything like that for the new movie. Puss in Boots The Last Wish was kind of anomaly in that it was mostly clean and had a good mix of action and comedy, but it still had a realistic depiction of a panic attack.
