I always watch the delivery tracker like a hawk when it is getting close, and if I'm not going to be home I tell someone who is home to go grab it for me. Thankfully I've never had anyone steal my shit but I live in a good area.
I believe that, if your package is too big to fit in a mailbox, USPS will require someone to receive the package at the door. If nobody answers, they leave a slip and you can go pick it up at the post office. There is an option for re-delivery you can set up on their website, but it's a government website so that shit never works.
There are other shipping companies who will require signatures if the item is above a certain cost, I think UPS and FedEx both do this. You can specifically request a signature for some delivery services, and with some it can be opted out of (like DHL).
