@veru Salt Lake County is much more liberal than the rest of the state because it is where the city is, but as far as cities go it is still far less liberal than many others in the country. We've also had a bit of a demographic shift with a lot of people moving from California over here, which has also been contributing to the ever-increasing housing costs.
From the information that we currently know, I don't think the shooter was a Republican or a conservative. Comes from a Republican family, and allegedly donated to the Trump campaign in 2020 when he was 17, but that's it. People forget 2020 was five years ago, plus he wasn't even an adult yet. 5 years is plenty of time for someone to change, or for someone to stop trying to hide their actual beliefs. Spoken as someone who also grew up Mormon and didn't leave the church until I was 19... I can completely see a 17 year old going along with their parents and community by any means necessary and then moving away from it in adulthood. Going from that to assassinating someone is insane, but it is indicative of the current state of affairs.
@veru the "trans messaging" is something a lot of people seem to be extremely misinterpreting, for some reason. the "owo notices your bulge* is certainly not trans, it's furry, but every keeps saying it is trans for some reason.
@beardalaxy@gameliberty.club My brother is at BYU currently and my other brother graduated last year, too. My parents and I have been around there in Orem, Lehi, and also to Salt Lake City. My brothers also say the same thing that the capital is definitely a lot more liberal.
I screamed my way out of the church as a teen and my parents were too embarrassed to force me back in. But during that period of rebellion, I was extremely unwell mentally and while I still think the church is not for me, it was downhill for me after that too.
We actually weren't born into it, since Hispanics are overwhelming Catholic. My close family got recruited at the door. It was bound to happen at some point, perhaps not even with Mormonism, because my mother wanted to get back to religion but she never "found the right one". She had been throwing religions at the wall, hoping one finally stuck. Then my entire close family got dragged in except me because well, I have always been the black sheep and still are.
And what you say is a very common sentiment I have always heard from those leaving Mormonism: Growing up, you just comply until you can leave. I respect and love my family a lot despite my criticism of the religion. It has legitimately set them on an orderly path, they are thriving, and some people need that. Just that peace that they found, I haven't been able to find myself.
I'm 90% in that the guy isn't a Republican too but 10% that he was one of those people who think Trump is a dictator. I'm going a lot based on the briefing today of what his family have said about him saying Kirk was "hateful" and the anti fascist larp the shooter had going with his bullet casings. I have heard the sentiment from Republicans about the "hate" and that Trump doesn't like Hispanics, which I absolutely disagree with. The same type of Hispanic that Trump condemns is the same type that ruined our native countries and I have witnessed that firsthand while living in my country of origin. Those type of people should stay out; I didn't come to America to deal with the same type of uncivilized person again. So yeah, that is my reasoning for my current position on the shooter.
