I remember that. They presented ancient Chinese (think BC times) social structure used by Confucianism as if it was the same as their caste system.
The thing is this wasn't even hereditary. Some pro-Chinese source will claim it was more meritocratic than even the European system. There was some sort of imperial examination open to all men regardless of class. You could get tax exemptions, legal privileges, and official posts if you passed whatever it was they judged you by.
Jeets are perpetually trapped in their caste. It gets crazier: wealth does not matter to the point where a prosperous Dalit entrepreneur remains "ritually subordinate" to a poor Brahmin. The caste determines who can share a cup of water with whom, where you can live, and whether your shadow can defile your fellow jeet.
