Frozen-cold take on defederation and moderation
@MykDowling @aurynn The problem with things like fediblock is that it can be very political - not in terms of values, but in terms of power.
Some instance admins in the past have been extremely petty and have advocated total shut-outs of people simply for what kind of software they used, what kinds of media they enjoyed, how they didn't use fedi the way the blocker told them they should use it, or who is part of a given moderation team.
It can get extremely ugly, and can result in a lot of people not able to talk to their friends anymore for reasons that have nothing to do with either group. The drama that can emerge from it is nauseating.
This isn't to say that admins shouldn't be judicious, it's just that randomly blocking things based on hearsay in the past has also hurt marginalized groups. This kind of thing requires actual investigation and collaboration, not just nodding and hitting a button over and over.
