@matrix merit is inherently affected by socioeconomic standing and is significantly easier and more possible to obtain with higher socioeconomic standing and depending on the circumstances may even be impossible to obtain (in the way in which Trump is talking about for merit-based admission to the US) in sufficiently poor standing
