What's up with this meme of fireworks being bad for the environment? Are you telling me that not firing fireworks is going to have an effect on the environment when planting 20 million trees won't?

Yeah. They definitely do, but I think that the effect is basically zero. The bigger danger is something catching on fire or someone blowing their hand off.
I think it's less of an environment issue, and more of a problem that the smoke persists in the air and is bad for your health. Although I doubt it could have a major effect on someone unless they had asthma or something similar.
Maybe one could argue that the metals used in fireworks pollute the soil/water, but I don't think any of the materials used are especially toxic.
