I remember doing something like this a few times when I was a very young kid, with a bunch of blankets on the floor. I'd pretend I was a dinosaur building a nest then try sleeping in it. It was fun, but very uncomfortable. I wonder if it started out like that for him, too - some dumb little childhood game that got out of control and became a weird obsession as he grew up.
