I don't think there's a western equivalent of lot of anime genres, especially shounen.
Yeah, you have to keep in mind the target audience. It can definitely be fun. I read FML, watched Death Note and One Punch Man and all were really fun.
I don't think that the original meme says that shounen is bad, just that people who watch them exclusively should broaden their horizon.
@matrix @beardalaxy I would call harry potter and star wars shounens, they're "chosen ones" that have to go save the world/galaxy. They've even got training arcs and everything, they just don't go on forever (yet).
