I have absolutely no clue why a jack marked line-in on my motherboard works as an out too

@matrix iirc modern Intel HDA chips let you rebind all of the ports

@matrix as i said, ports can be rebound to other functions, it could be that factory configuration is incorrect and line-in port is configured to be line-out instead

@matrix could as well be, maybe measures the impedance.

@matrix I've had this happen before. Maybe they label it for what I can be used for since there is already an output, but that one just works as input too whereas the other one doesn't.
