The Matrix is a story about Hell.
The entire movie takes place in Hell.
The Robot Takeover was The Judgement, and those who were righteous became one with the machines.
Those who were sinners were condemned to live in 1999 forever.
And Hell has a side-quest where you break out of Hell, and attempt to overthrow God, but that's also Hell, and you never actually get out.
@cjd @matrix

> Those who were sinners were condemned to live in 1999 forever.

Wait a second..."condemned"?
@adiz @matrix @cjd YOU COULD JUST GET ONTO AN AIRPLANE

IF SOMEONE CALLED YOU AND YOU DIDN'T PICK UP, THEY WAITED A WHOLE DAY TO CALL BACK INSTEAD OF SENDING YOU AN EMAIL AT 10:15 ASKING IF YOU GOT THE MESSAGE THEY SENT YOU ON SLACK AT 10:13

@p Everything was a lot easier and cheaper. There was like infinite hope and positivity for the future. People were generally happy and excited. SE Asia and places like China and Japan were absolutely lit. We were not stuck in our current hellish purgatory. @matrix @cjd

@bonifartius @matrix @cjd This was also an era where there had never been a bad Final Fantasy or Mario game.
@NonPlayableClown @matrix @bonifartius @cjd Is that what "real" means, from your perspective? Officially licensed and the word "Mario" in the title somewhere? Does Donkey Kong count as a Mario game? Or does Mario Party? I'm just trying to understand your rules.
>Does Donkey Kong count as a Mario game?

The original Donkey Kong was not Mario, it's just simply "Jump man" as the protagonist. That's a statement by Miyamoto.

>Or does Mario Party?

Yes.

>I'm just trying to understand your rules.

It's official licensed and stars Mario.

Now if you are saying that it's not a Mario Platformer gaming then that's a fair statement.
Then I would simply put out Mario's Time Machine.
@NonPlayableClown @matrix @bonifartius @cjd

> The original Donkey Kong was not Mario, it's just simply "Jump man" as the protagonist. That's a statement by Miyamoto.

That was his name in that game, yes; when localized, he was named "Mario" in the US by Nintendo. He was called Mario in the local and the localized versions of Donkey Kong Jr., the direct sequel: Jumpman was Mario, canonically. So, was only the US localization of Donkey Kong a Mario game? Does Shigeru Miyamoto consider the CD-i games "Mario games"? I'm just trying to understand the rules.

> It's official licensed and stars Mario.

Okay. So Mario Picross, Mario is Missing, these are Mario games? Mario makes appearances in the puzzle games "Yoshi" and "Yoshi's Cookie", officially licensed titles: are those Mario games or does Mario have to be in the title? What constitutes a game: does "Mario Teaches Typing" count as a Mario game? Mario appears in the promotional art for Excitebike, but not in the game: surely Excitebike does not count as a Mario game. Mario is the referee in Punch-Out: is this a Mario game?
>Okay. So Mario Picross, Mario is Missing, these are Mario games?

Yes

>Mario makes appearances in the puzzle games "Yoshi" and "Yoshi's Cookie"

No, he's a costar/ guest appearance.

>What constitutes a game: does "Mario Teaches Typing" count as a Mario game?

Yes

>Mario appears in the promotional art for Excitebike, but not in the game: surely Excitebike does not count as a Mario game.

No

>Mario is the referee in Punch-Out: is this a Mario game?

No, he's not a playable character, just a guest appearance.
@NonPlayableClown @matrix @bonifartius @cjd

> No, he's a costar/ guest appearance.

So Mario must be a playable character.

> No, he's a costar/ guest appearance.

In Yoshi, Mario is actually the only playable character: he sits under the plates and rotates them.

> Yes

But in this game, Mario is not a playable character; neither is he in Mario is Missing.
>But in this game, Mario is not a playable character.

Assuming you are talking about Mario Picross, he is represented as the cursor.

>neither is he in Mario is Missing.

Touchè, technically it is Luigi being the main character.
@NonPlayableClown @matrix @bonifartius @cjd

> Assuming you are talking about Mario Picross,

Mario Teaches Typing. I'm not sure I'd call it a game, even, which would, I think, disqualify it from being a Mario game.

I would not call the CD-i games "Mario games", at any rate. There is a series, a main line of games, but there is no official canon: I do not think anyone ever said "Did you play the new Mario game?" and referred to Mario Picross or the CD-i games or Mario Teaches Typing.

Mario Sunshine sucked.
>but there is no official canon

Eh... Mario doesn't care about being cannon.
In fact would Mario 2 (USA) not be considered Mario game since
A) it was dream
B) was skin of Doki Doki panic.

>Mario Sunshine sucked.

It has it's moments, but it's filled with such jank.
Definitely my least favorite 3D Mario Platformer game.

Also fuck this mission.
@NonPlayableClown @matrix @bonifartius @cjd

> A) it was dream

This does not stop it from being a Mario game.

> B) was skin of Doki Doki panic.

It was a reworking. It was released as a Mario game.

> Definitely my least favorite 3D Mario Platformer game.

"Mario is held hostage by the HOA" feels like a side-mission premise, not a game.
>"Mario is held hostage by the HOA" feels like a side-mission premise, not a game.

Technically framed and then held hostage by the HOA.
Meanwhile Bowser gaslight his son and Peach about her being the mother.
@p @NonPlayableClown @bonifartius @cjd @matrix

SMB 3 was the peak. My son has a every Mario game that exists. Between the retro-pi and his other consoles, he literally has them all. If he's just chilling, he'll be on the old beat-up SNES I refurbished for him playing SMB 3 on the all-stars cart that's seen so much wear the grey plastic is yellowing.

The kids know quality gaming. Spiffy graphics only go so far.
@SilverDeth @NonPlayableClown @bonifartius @cjd @matrix I've still got a soft spot for 1, but 3 is fun. I think SMB3's World 2 might be some of the best level design in the series.
@bonifartius @matrix @cjd "Multiplayer? Like do you dial your friend's modem and do IPX/SPX? Or are you talking about MUDs?"
@p @matrix @bonifartius @cjd there was no bad Final Fantasy or Mario game prior to the collapse of the Roman Empire. It was all downhill from there.
@matrix Uh, you left out the bisexual PCP orgies they get to do once a year before the machine culling. People love that.
