He was called Mario in the local and the localized versions of Donkey Kong Jr., the direct sequel: Jumpman was Mario, canonically. So, was only the US localization of Donkey Kong a Mario game? SMB 3 was the peak. My son has a every Mario game that exists. Between the retro-pi and his other consoles, he literally has them all. If he's just chilling, he'll be on the old beat-up SNES I refurbished for him playing SMB 3 on the all-stars cart that's seen so much wear the grey plastic is yellowing.
The kids know quality gaming. Spiffy graphics only go so far.
