@NonPlayableClown @matrix @bonifartius @cjd > The original Donkey Kong was not Mario, it's just simply "Jump man" as the protagonist. That's a statement by Miyamoto.
That was his name in that game, yes; when localized, he was named "Mario" in the US by Nintendo. He was called Mario in the local and the localized versions of Donkey Kong Jr., the direct sequel: Jumpman was Mario, canonically. So, was only the US localization of Donkey Kong a Mario game? Does Shigeru Miyamoto consider the CD-i games "Mario games"? I'm just trying to understand the rules.

Okay. So Mario Picross, Mario is Missing, these are Mario games? Mario makes appearances in the puzzle games "Yoshi" and "Yoshi's Cookie", officially licensed titles: are those Mario games or does Mario have to be in the title? What constitutes a game: does "Mario Teaches Typing" count as a Mario game? Mario appears in the promotional art for Excitebike, but not in the game: surely Excitebike does not count as a Mario game. Mario is the referee in Punch-Out: is this a Mario game?
