@matrix After visiting Japan, the meme doesn't work for me anymore.
It's literally true, there's no subversion of expectation, no humor.

You take almost anything, and almost anything (Japan), and the Japanese version will be better in some way.

Notable exceptions are:
Ad trucks.
Salary / purchasing power.
Toilets (they ARE better, but overrated)

@coded_artist purchasing power is a pretty important one, but a better financial metric here would be disposable income, it's pretty low.
i also heard cheese in japan sucks

@matrix I only eat normie cheeses (the kind you get on burgers or pizza), and those are fine.

My friend is a serious coffee drinker, and said the coffee sucks badly.
Canned coffee is passable, specialty coffee shops have some good coffee, but don't bother with coffee at restaurants and cafes.

Bread was OK, not great.

But then you can get alcohol everywhere, so why drink coffee?
And the buns are awesome, and come in every flavor.
Every kind of sea food, chicken nuggets (they make them from the thigh and not the breast), pork, etc...

When it comes to food, the absolute worst tourist trap was a 5/10, I'm convinced you can't find an actually bad restaurant unless it's their gimmick or something.
You can walk into literally any random place, and the food will be awesome.

Excellent, 10/10, would go again.

These are a couple of places I went to, right outside Akabane station.
The SushiRo (conveyor belts!) was also great, with way more food than we had stomachs to sample.
