Linux Mint has released version 22. This version is based off of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and will be supported until 2029. This updates the Cinnamon desktop to version 6.2, updates the Mate desktop to version 1.26.2, improves HiDPI support, updates the kernel to version 6.8, switching the default audio server to Pipewire, and more. It uses SystemD for the init. Linux Mint is a very user friendly distro and a great starting point if you are looking to switch from Windows or Mac to something more privacy and security focussed. Linux Mint currently ships with options for the Cinnamon desktop as well as Mate and XFCE. It can also easily be used with the libre kernel if one wanted to if you follow the instructions at FSFLA.

This week's donation went to the Artix Linux distro. It is a distro based off of Arch Linux. It offers a choice of init systems including OpenRC, Runit, S6, and Dinit. It also offers a selection of desktop environemnts including Cinnamon, Mate, LXDE, LXQT, Plasma and XFCE. There are also community editions of Mate and Plasma that have more preinstalled packages for those that want to have to install less afterwards. Artix uses the Calamares installer and allows you to choose between BTRFS, Ext4, F2FS, and XFS for your filesystem. Artix is a great distro if you want a wide selection of choices to make the distro yours. I can't think of any other distro that offers so much choice.
