This week's donation went to the XMPP Standards Foundation. They support the software and services behind the XMPP network protocol. If you've never heard of XMPP it is a messaging protocol that is a more privacy and security friendly alternative to options like SMS, WhatsApp, etc. The architecture of the XMPP network is similar to email; anyone can run their own XMPP server and there is no central master server. This federated open system approach allows users to interoperate with others on any server using a 'JID' user account, similar to an email address. Various ways to secure trhe emssages on XMPP exist such as OMEMO and OpenPGP.
