They are being attacked, fight/flight kicks in and at some point they will defend themselves. Especially if they feel that their life is at risk. They'll take a few hits because they don't want to look bad, but then attack.

They won't get there on time, and we don't have self-defence in the same way as the US. If someone decides to rob or harm you, that's sort of it. You'll have to use less force than them and prove that it was reasonable force used to protect yourself. But you can't have weapons just laying around. So if they are stronger or have a weapon, you're fucked.
