Why Mastodon and the fediverse are “doomed to fail”

-> a small rant about how the profit lens distorts our understanding of success vs. failure:

@eloquence This is interesting! I've wanted to start my own instance for awhile (currently working with @p on that) and I mean I'd have two funding goals:

1. It can raise enough money to pay for itself (covers its own costs)
2. It can raise enough buffer to start other federated or sister services/projects

I mean it'd be cool to have a career out of running a instance running just off of the donations but I'm not seeing it as all that feasible rn...

@realcaseyrollins @eloquence @p In order for that to work, I think you need to use a monthly crowdtipping service like Patreon or Subscribe Star as I think one-time donations won't be enough.

@xianc78 @realcaseyrollins @eloquence @p
But most fedu users don't trust that because it invades privacy, therefore you're missing the point of bitcoin
@jojo @realcaseyrollins @eloquence @xianc78 You know you can buy, like, $10 worth of bitcoin, right? You don't have to buy a full bitcoin.
@realcaseyrollins @eloquence Unfortunately, I believe social.coop can't hear me, but otherwise the instances I'm doing as part of the beta will be free forever.

Yeah, I agree, but it's like, I run my mail server so that I (and a few other people) can have email that Google doesn't touch. I'm not really worried about money for something like that any more than I am about turning a profit cooking myself dinner.
@p @realcaseyrollins @eloquence the instance is supported through GNU Taler backed by P-Coins which are just pizzas p has to cook and ship to you to cash out.
@p @eloquence @realcaseyrollins time to redeem my pcoins for a pizza and a turboforce soda.
