I wouldn’t call myself good at fixing things, but if you want one single hot tip from me:

If you have an external monitor that stops working, it’s pretty much guaranteed it’s a busted capacitor. Before you chuck it, open it up and look if you see a bulgy one. Look up “bulged capacitor picture” online. Soldering a replacement on it will cost you less than a coffee in solder + capacitor + electricity.
