Self-hosting is the correct path. It's very easy. Pleroma OTP install on VPS is easy/cheap as hell (husk is ~$5/mo, technically more since I migrated hosts and double-paid for some things.)

For the non-technically savvy people I would suggest talking to @p or @alex and paying them to administrate an instance.
