Fun fact:

Years ago I asked about the possibility to video lectures to save records of them online for students to use for studying and was told I couldn't because it would probably violate FERPA.

This year because of covid I have to videotape all lectures in case students don't feel like coming to campus or fall ill.

Basically all the things we were told you can't do that would make academia more accessible are suddenly being done. It's almost like they could have been done all the time.

Although, why would you keep sending a follow request? It's not going to change anything or get seen quicker. Better to be able to cancel it, and if there is a glitch or anything then it would be better to cancel the first request and then send another afterwards. Ehh.

Yeah, can't seem to back out of a follow when it is just a sent request. All you can do is request again. Weird. I wonder if there is a time limit?

Groups are more like chatrooms and have always been in the fediverse. OK, there was a little stretch between 2009 and 2010 when they didn't federate very well. But I think you're describing aspects (privacy lists, circles, collections, whatever) more than groups. Those are essentially mailing lists, which we've had since the 70s and again the continuity was only interrupted for a brief period from 2008-2009 because OStatus offered no privacy.

Every new generation that arrives in the fediverse tends to throw out or ignore everything that came before and then spends a few years re-inventing it.
