Devices are pretty much the only thing there is to do here, so I'm not unsympathetic. It's just hard to watch them fight over a device that's only capable of serving up shitty games designed to get people addicted.

That's cool! My upbringing was similar, except minus the LAN and games after 2004 or so wouldn't work cuz it was a #WindowsXP machine with 256 MB of RAM.
But I got a gamepad from a thrift store for like five bucks and played NHL 2000 and Lego Soccer Mania with my brother. Those were good times...

@Elfie @realcaseyrollins thankfully, it's just a crummy Kindle Fire tablet that's locked down.
But in hindsight, I grew up with a hand-me-down PC with no connection outside of the LAN, and the experience of playing games with my family or by myself was superb. It served as my gateway into Linux and game development.

Watching my girlfriend's kids fight over who gets to use the tablet makes me think that maybe giving kids mobile devices is a terrible idea.
