@realcaseyrollins pretty sure it's some random scanning botnet, around 3800 (some tried empty account so my awk printed the wrong column, but not too many) different IP addresses.
maybe they're betting that root login is disabled on most boxes

Or just don't bother with DDoS protection because the likelihood that anyone will actually need it is 0.0000000000000001% (exaggeration but you get the point)

As for a CDN, I assume whoever needs one is using AWS or DO. Both of them have terrible bandwidth limitations that any actually decent VPS provider blows out of the water.
