@ArdainianRight Roku is shit for multiple reasons. Some of the glamping units have Rokus and the amount of calls I get about them makes me wanna chuck'm in the lake. Roku is also a fucking asshole with repairing your own device. The "haha, fucking buy a new one chud" mentality. @Giganova8 @MoeBritannica

@matrix when they say "not all women are like that" they mean her

@Giganova8
I once had to completely powerwash my computer because of something like this. Because for some godforsaken reason, some part of Debian Testing (not Sid, fuck that) decided it just wanted to ruin my fucking day.
Bonus: IT WAS DURING EXAM WEEK, MY BACKUP HAD MY FIRST DRAFT AND NOT THE FINAL ESSAY COPY!

@Kyonko802
Few things annoy me more than such intentionally vague things like that.
"Wait a while"
How long? Hours? Minutes? Days? @ArdainianRight @Giganova8 @MoeBritannica

Spin the wheel of "what fucked up this time?" If you're lucky, you won't lose your everything!

Oh, so, I have a story relating to that.
I do tech stuff for a huge year-round equipped campsite, nice place, pay is alright for the area, I mostly answer phones and dick around with the logs and things.

Anyway, the fucker wanted me to put 404 as "you were sent on a snipe hunt"

I told him we are putting "this page can't be found" like a normal fucking website because this isn't Scout Camp, this is a website where people want to book campsites, not be bullied by some asshole scoutmaster.
@ArdainianRight @MoeBritannica

@MoeBritannica I was lucky enough to have (somewhat) tech-literate parents that stressed the importance of looking at the help pages in programs or the manuals of devices, it's probably because of this that I gained a healthy sense of just how fucking volatile technology can be and why being user friendly is important, but retard friendly is infuriating.

User friendly: "hey, we're just showing you this alert to make sure that this is the file/directory you wanted to delete. It's linked to important structures so please make sure."
Retard friendly: "you can't delete this even though it's not a system or critical file"

@Giganova8
>the computer does what I expect it to when I tell it to do something
and doesn't pull this genie "haha, I did *exactly* what you said, but not what you wanted" shit that older computers used to. (Yes, I am a zoomie, but I used Win95 as well.)
>and informative way so I know what went wrong
This part is especially important.
Enough of this "oopsie woopsie, we did a fucky wucky" nonsense, give me a fucking error message I can search so I can find out what the fuck happened. Modern stuff doing this is fucking stupid.

@Giganova8
One of the monitors at my work desk is exclusively the command prompt. All it is for `grep`-ing record logs and reporting it to people.
@MoeBritannica

@realcaseyrollins It wasn't really ever *that* funny in the first place; you really had to be good at making the joke work, which only a few people ever managed.

It's the same with the "I identify as an attack helicopter" jokes. It was funny once, maybe twice, because it had to fit within a very specific context.

@ArdainianRight There's a point at which user friendly (good, necessary) becomes retard friendly (don't, very bad, plz avoid) @MoeBritannica

@ArdainianRight Part of TikTok's appeal is that it's bingeable, the videos are only so long so there's no room for longform content, everything is about the same length so you get used to a certain investment.
Even if your attention span is pretty good, I'm pretty sure extensive use of TikTok will just lower it over time.

The only beneficial thing is that it's shown that some people are pretty good at brief/laconic comedy, which is a skill some people take for granted.
@rlier23 @MoeBritannica

@MoeBritannica I'll preface this by saying that I am technically a zoomie myself: this is the consequence of having technology that is *too* user-friendly.

I'm not saying it needs to be Arch Linux level unfriendly, but there shouldn't be the amount of handholding that Mac/OSX/iOS has nor the amount of "rtfm fgt" that Unix has.

For a lot of people around my age "tech" is stuff like Alexa, Smart TVs, Amazon Echo, iPhones, etc. rather than something like servers, NAS, or what most people usually think of as tech.

Because instead of telling people "hey, you actually should spend some time learning about this technology that you'll be using every day!" they just make it incredibly fucking simple and retard-friendly. This has its upsides for some things, I won't deny that's really useful but it has a drawback: if that's all you're exposed to, you don't *really* know how technology works.

I could continue but I don't want to rant about it.
