Melee is unbalanced as hell, it's just that its handful of Broken characters are relatively evenly match. Much of the roster is utter trash. And even with an extremely liberal definition of competitive stages it has, what, 5 of them? Pokemon Stadium with transformations is tournament legal, come the fuck on...
Using the same definition for Ultimate, that game has like 30 competitive stages, and 40+ tournament-viable characters.

@ChristiJunior @wowaname @dielan @xianc78 Half of the cast in Melee is at least somewhat usable. Balance isn't great, but it's not as bad as top-level Brawl, which is actually just 4-5 characters with a larger cast. Smash 4 and Ultimate are better balanced than Melee overall though.

@xianc78 @ArdanianRight @wowaname @dielan I also don't get Melee fans acting like Nintendo somehow owes them for showcasing a dead game, on a dead console, that Nintendo no longer cares about and that doesn't show off any of the new characters or games that Nintendo DOES care about. All Melee does is drain attention and players away from the competitive scenes of newer Smash games, and since competitive Melee is so autistic and grindy, competitive Melee players are often Melee-only.

The Switch should have pretty much all the major first party N64, GameCube and Wii games available through the Virtual Console by now, but instead we got got the Stinky NSO NES nostalgia service.

They want a native HD port of the game so it could look better when played on big screens without the delays you get from upscaling. I don't know how they set their consoles up during these events but I guess this is why they want it.

Which is why you can play Final Fantasy VII on the Switch, but not Ocarina of Time. Resident Evil 4 is on the console, but not Paper Mario: TTYD. You can play Skyrim on the console, but not Mario Galaxy 2. And on it goes.

@ChristiJunior @wowaname @ArdanianRight @dielan They needed something to sell during the 2016 holiday season as the Wii U was pretty much dead at that point and the 3DS couldn't cut it as portable gaming is more of a niche now. But the NES and SNES Classic has unintentionally created a new retro gaming craze. Genesis, PS1, and Turbo-Grafx-16 got mini consoles and now you are seeing mini-arcade cabinets (which are garbage) in places like Wal-Mart and Target.
This has apparently become much more profitable than selling ROMs on an online service.

Doesn't that have more lag than a TV? Anyway, that's in the past now that Nintendo made them shut down the tournament because people were using ROMs instead of buying the Melee for Switch version.

@xianc78 @dielan i think that's more endemic with and adjacent to GDQ. majority of runners i keep up with are male, maybe like one female, and i wanna say no trans people. i know there are female and tranny runners out there, but i guess none of them play games i watch, or they arent interesting enough for me to watch. typically im watching games i grew up with, or n64-era games because they just have cool tech; and at that i mostly watch top-level runners of those games. so, already, i'm avoiding a lot of the nintendo and celeste and metroid shit that the trannies probably eat up, and im avoiding anyone with an obnoxious personality who cant actually play games because muh meritocracy
