On that note, I don't know what justifies Near specifically to be an "enemy." I'm not actually familiar with his political activity, but him being furry and having mental illnesses doesn't seem to justify what happened.
From his letter (even if there's plenty of questionable directions it went) it seemed like he was content having his head down and working on emulators and translations and keeping to himself rather than go into some kind of political activism on behalf of trannies or wotever.

I didn't see the suicide threat as a sign of them being an enemy of free-speaking people, but rather them being very unstable and ill and desperate (despite there being no compelling event for that desperation to happen that particular night).
Which is why they suddenly decided "well you ran out of time to talk to your lawyer!" in under 24 hours. That's not coming from a normal mindset.
Which probably means he'd be dead one way or another (unless KF caused all of his illnesses to begin with...?), but...
