Nothing, just 45 minutes into trying to add a minimal testing framework to a C program, with meson and all.
Use Rust, kids.

@lorabe @federicomena Depends on what you do, C allows to do a lot of things and it took and still takes a lot of space.
Go, zig, haskell, erlang, … easily come to my mind as replacements to C.
But in a way, so is stuff like lua, perl, python, …
Heck, Java which I feel detached itself from being a replacement used to be presented as one. (see https://www.jwz.org/doc/java.html for the old thoughts)
And C++ isn't an alternative to C, it's severely based on C and then forked far away while to me a good replacement stands by itself and often has a comparable degree of complexity.

How can a VM language be a replacement for C?
@lanodan @lorabe @federicomena I don't think you can write an OS kernel in Java.
@xianc78 @lorabe @federicomena Yeah but a lot of things like daemons and applications ended up being written in Java instead of C.
Heck, mobile applications have been written in Java for decades (most feature phones were already using Java) while I wouldn't be surprised to learn that embedded/mobile applications was were C was almost irreplaceable in the past.
Sure, the kernel and bare-embedded stuff is where C is the most irreplaceable at but that's not the only thing C allows or allowed.

And the point of a language is to write software, if you can write a whole category of software in another language, well, wouldn't that other language be a replacement?
