The public statement essentially says that "Alt-Tech" needs to create an alliance against censorship and intimidation, and for a good reason. KF is now essentially in an 8chan situation, but with a few differences.
The whole reason KF has had issues staying up when everyone else online has moved the fuck on is because of a certain ex-Google employee with a "consent accident" named Liz that everyone has nicknamed "dong gone", who now works at a tech startup. Said employee has been trying really hard to scrub his antics off the internet, including harassing KF with a @google.com email address on behalf of someone else, the "consent accident", and a HackerNews comment alleging he was close to open pedos.
In a way, it's very similar to 8chan and Fred's crusade to eradicate imageboards from the internet (complete with sanitizing aspects the past) but there's a few key differences; but the important one is Fred was ex-8chan and did it out of petty revenge (and cozying up with generic woke furries), Liz kept on poking the bear. Many of the same tactics are at play, from media hit pieces to harassing the right people.
Anyhow, anywhere KF goes Liz will harass the shit out of the people behind the site, from "girl talk" early in the morning to going after family members. When that fails, he'll use the Sleeping Giants/similar activist trick of making companies move hosts to pressure them into dropping KF.
So what Josh calls for is an alliance of Alt-Tech companies to find a datacenter that supports them and lets them host. Aside from the fact that this can very well be a single point of failure or asking to get hacked by some skid wanting to make a name for himself in the left (this is exactly why Epik was targeted and why some have said we shouldn't centralize on using only BuyVM), there's one other problem: KF literally doesn't have many allies.
When your site goes around pissing off everyone in groups on the internet that might give a shit about your issues or support you, they're not going to care. They're going to want your site to go down too and they won't care because they'll think you deserved it. A lot of the reasons why tech libertarians were willing to host fringe Neo Nazi websites back in the day is because they weren't personally going after them.
Which is the #1 takeaway from the KF thing. You want to have allies online, not enemies, and you want to be as drama free as possible. Drama is what hurt attempts at bunker imageboards (let alone the CP spam/fedposting that plagues some altboards), and it will hurt attempts at getting friends because they will remember what you did to them last year.

In the case of the 8/v/ alts, most just wanted an excuse to get away from Mark. Others were sick of GamerGate threads taking up most of the activity.
Others are literally dead unfortunately and many of the people are now on the fedi I'm sure.
@PhenomX6 Mark ran vch which was on the webring. He only intended to run it until 8kun was ready. Once he shutdown vch, most people went to julay. Eventually Mark had enough of the 8kun rebranding and new policies, wrote an open letter to Jim and Ron, and later got fired. He and Acid launched 8chan.moe which is the closest thing to the original 8chan. 8chan.moe is still pretty active, at least the /v/ board is. All the popular boards on 8chan have (semi)-active alts on either 8moe or any of the webring boards.
Yeah a lot of former 8chan users are on the Fedi now, from what I can tell. Either that or they went to niche forums like RPGCodex. I most of them would rather be on 8chan though, especially with all the nonstop pepe, wojack, and gigachad posts on here. Instances like Poast seem to align more with 4chan than 8chan in terms of culture.
Though I would discourage drama posting since aside from not wanting to be KF 2 I also want quality posting.
@PhenomX6 I miss /liberty/ because there was literally no other libertarian imageboard out there. 8chan.moe has one but it's dead. It seems to have been bot-spammed by the same LibertyPatroit bot on the fedi. It was never truly active, even on the original 8chan, but ever since the split, it has never been the same since. Though recently, zzzchan create one, but there are only a few threads right now. Really a fucking shame because all the libertarian discussions online are happening on Telescam which I refuse to sign up for.
Surprisingly, the /leftypol/ bunker seems to be more active that all the /pol/ bunkers combined. They were never on the webring and they outright refused to return to 8kun or be a part of 8moe.
@PhenomX6 8chan.moe's /fur/ seems to be (semi)-active. Fchan still exists along with tgfb.net, but I don't know what /fur/ or /furry/ thinks of those sites.
An imageboard for furries should be a no-brainer. I bet most furries want to be as anonymous as possible and there has to be some of them that realize that Telegram isn't actually private (that thing requires a mobile phone number for fucks sake).
There's several problems with that. Problem #1 is that furries are namefags by nature, even when they make new identities they will username and avatar reuse everywhere.
The other problems of course deal with the fact that imageboard furries are cut from a different cloth from normie furries, and I mean they have views the mainstream orthodoxy of the fandom would hate. Aside from politics of course, there's namely a hatred for Patreon and what it's done to the art scene, there's a hatred for artists who were being scummy with Patreon and business (Kayla-Na and Jasonafex were commonly earning threads daily on /furry/ for this and Blitzdrachin was increasingly mocked before her infamous meltdown about how "I was groomed into drawing furry porn" for doing shit like trying to DRM Patreon images).
Meanwhile mentally ill furry artists want to control everything that is said about them online, take down any image they uploaded and regret later, etc. They absolutely hate the idea of imageboards and art mirroring to the core, and believe that those darn pirates are keeping them working at McDonald's. Yiff.party in particular was attracting the attention of Kotaku journoscum as they malded about piracy.
And of course there's the fact whoever runs it should either have a backbone or as little blackmail as possible (likely by not being in the fandom lol) because furries can and will use knowledge they have on each other to ruin each others lives when crossed.
@PhenomX6 A similar problem can be seen with the /agdg/ community, but on a much smaller scale.
Of course, /agdg/ users tend to be namefags (some even going as far as revealing their real names), but it is at least somewhat justified because you are just using imageboards to show off your game and you want to be known for your other games as well (assuming you will publish more than one game), otherwise people will simply call you <insert game title here>dev, and being a gamedev automatically makes you an e-celeb anyway. However, this has lead to some Reddit and Discord users shilling their games on /agdg/ threads which annoys some users. Though the opposite effect also happens as many /agdg/ users also feel the need to shill their games on Reddit and Discord, and even create communities for their games on said sites just so they can have a sizable audience, which pisses off many /v/ users because they feel like their fellow gamedevs are betraying them.
And of course, you have a lot of "normie" gamedevs hating imageboard users for political reasons because they have been indoctrinated by GDC, Extra Credits, their useless "game designer's" course in college, and the like. Luckily, I've never heard of a single /agdg/ dev being cancelled, but it wouldn't surprise me, especially given how pozzed itch.io is. The only thing preventing them from being cancelled is that their games are relatively obscure and most people, except for hardcore SJWs, don't bother searching their internet history.
Seriously, go find a non-imageboard gamedev community that isn't pozzed. I honestly wish there were more gamedevs on this side of fedi, but the only ones I know of besides myself are @beardalaxy, @Binkle, @nekofag, and @crunklord420.
If we talked more regularly about our progress and problems, we'd probably have a decent gamedev community even if we all have wildly different focuses
I think the only way it works is with an admin and wrangling team that is unable to be influenced by the drama and mental illness, and then hosting in a DMCA disrespecting country so all the "u stole my stuff!!!!1111" reports when something gets reposted can be laughed at and ignored.
