Why do women like flowers so much? They are a terrible gift. They don't last long at all, are required to be put in a vase (if picked), can make a huge mess if you are not careful, and you are left with rotten ones after a few weeks or days.
I also don't see the point in planting flowers either. Plant something useful like fruits and vegetables, or herbs that you can use for natural medicine (some flowers can be used for that purpose, but I'm pretty sure they are not the pretty ones). Stop wasting your money, water, and space on plants that serve no practical purpose!

@xianc78 I think in the modern context it's not so much the flowers themselves as it is the symbolism of "I care about/think about you, and here's something to represent that."
As for why we've settled on flowers as the universal accepted symbol for that, it probobly begins and ends with "they're pretty and they smell good (most of the time)."
