okay so I did some notes and I trashed literally every half-done project. For the year 2024 I want to get into game dev, serious mode.
@FrailLeaf hate i had to learn it this way but its true
@FrailLeaf gdscript is inconsistant and weird hell, half the shit doesnt even work, it's ungodly slow atleast on mobile and web exports, you constant run into areas where it feels like shits just missing entirely, and you have to do these big workarounds. the layout nodes just disnt work at all on this one project to the point it had to be recreated from scratch, adaptive scaling is difficult on there and the wiki just says oh use the layout nodes and then it DOESNT FUCKING WORK, there tends to be either no way or multiple ways to do many things and each way will have different bs limitations. core features will just not work and instead of not shipping with them theyre just like "yeah its a known issue but not high priority". for some reason random shit just isnt dynamically updatable? in a fucking game engine. and the positioning and scaling of shit is so weird theres like the scale and sometimes size and also position and these arent in pixel btw and then child elements will be proportional in all of that and relative and you cant just do it in absolute so after one or two layers its just a hell figuring out how to size shit, and many things cant have ratio change

i could go on i have to use this for money you see, and its the bane of my existance
@FrailLeaf gdscript is like python but worse, less consistant, less featureful, with arbitrary changes, still whitespace autism oh and fucking errors always in the log not of my code erroring but THE FUCKING INTERPRETER CRASHING
@mja @FrailLeaf I once had fairly high hopes for Godot, but they were totally cured by actually using it
@allison @FrailLeaf real
istfg anything i do for hobby will be as it always has been
custom engine or love2d. i can use a few libraries and have a much less painful experience than i would have with a full fledged engine like godot
@mja @FrailLeaf love2d is legitimate sex, probably the best of its type by far at least until certain up and coming engines/frameworks I have my eye on mature

@allison @mja @FrailLeaf I honestly don't see why you shouldn't just use something like SDL or SFML if you are just doing 2D.

@xianc78 @allison @mja @FrailLeaf I like rmxp because it enables even people like me to make games

@galena @mja @allison @FrailLeaf Never heard of RMXP.

Frameworks like Love2D, Pygame, and MonoGame are merely wrappers for multimedia frameworks like SDL and SFML. You can easily learn SDL or SFML if you already know Love2D or Pygame.

@xianc78 @mja @FrailLeaf choice of language (lua is nice) plus the ability to distribute cross platform with no issues, the old java "write once run anywhere" chestnut
@xianc78 @mja @FrailLeaf love is just a bit nicer from a packaging etc standpoint but it is appreciated, personally I'm waiting for my friend to finish up on his love killer engine to replace it so I can get to work on my shm00pz
