I almost feel like this has actually been eroding my friendships over the last 4 or 5 years. Everyone always wants to play the new hot game that is out, I'll try it and not really be into it too much and they'll keep playing it with people from work or whatever. I keep trying to ask if they want to play games with me that I enjoy, even ones we used to play together, but it never happens :P It's more or less gotten to the point where I don't even try out most new games anymore since I know I'll probably play them twice, think they're just okay, and then within the next month something else new comes out that everyone switches to anyway. My friends I've had for over a decade are now better friends with people they've known for like 3 or 4 years than they are with me. I know people change and friend groups change and stuff, it's part of life, but having nobody IRL that enjoys the same stuff as you kinda sucks. I don't even try to be a hipster or anything. I'm not trying to be actively against popular stuff. I don't even think things being popular is why I stay away from them. I think my tastes just often REALLY don't align with any larger community.

@beardalaxy This is why I wasn't really able to socialize in college, along with not wanting to use Discord.

@xianc78 yeah, it's really weird when everyone is into something but you're not, and there's actually nobody that is into what you are around. or, they might be, but just not as much as whatever the "current thing" is.

i think a small issue is that a lot of people want to be enveloped in the social zeitgeist of it all, and this is something my brother actually brought up with me as a reason to why he watched all the marvel movies up to endgame despite them being kind of mediocre. not a lot of people think "oh, i can just play this game later since it's always gonna' be around." they want to do it NOW so that they can be a part of a cultural happening. i really don't get that way, and i realized that pretty fast in high school when i had my own money and i made lots of poor purchases because everyone else was doing it. i just go for things i like these days, more or less, and that tends to not align so closely with whatever is popping off at the current moment.

daryl in this video talks about how he literally never played among us. i haven't either lol, not once. never played fall guys. never played palworld. and i likely never will play any of these games. for me it's not because they're popular, it's because i know i won't enjoy them for very long. but at least i'll still pop into one of these every now and then to play something with my friends.... which is a courtesy i can't say they have given me for years now, even with a game they don't have to buy. they just have to play it for a bit with me but that's too much i guess, because they'd rather play the finals or lethal company or palworld or helldivers with their work buddies than spend a few hours on the weekend playing rock band or smash with me.

@beardalaxy I've only watched part of the video but I also think that once/if it becomes popular, people will start liking it because they are being told to like it without giving their own reasons why.

@xianc78 the same thing also comes with hating something. i see people do that with NGS all the time, or at least from my perspective it seems like that's the case.

i also did my fair share of hating on games like Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 because that seemed like the popular opinion at the time. i didn't really think about it much, i just parroted what i heard other people say who had opinions that i agreed on very often so i had no reason to doubt this opinion.

then i actually played those games again and was like... you know what? these are actually still great. and i used to say i loved banjo and kazooie, and conker, and dk64, but going back to play those games was certainly an eye-opening experience on just how bad they have aged, especially in comparison to the aforementioned OoT and SM64.

@beardalaxy >i also did my fair share of hating on games like Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 because that seemed like the popular opinion at the time.

I don't think those games were ever hated. Those were the most overhyped games of all time. Though, in recent years you have those who claim that OOT is overrated (which is justified, imo) and Majora's Mask being claimed as the underrated gem. Though both mentalities seemed to have died down lately.

@xianc78 @beardalaxy
I'm old enough to remember early internet vidya discussion where OOT was treated as the untouchable pinnacle of gaming. The negativity towards it was in light of the blatantly unrealistic hype it got, before the consensus settled into recognizing that it was a legendary and groundbreaking game that's still really good today.

@ArdainianRight @beardalaxy Yet everyone who loves the game paradoxically loves to complain about Navi, the Water Temple more than actual praises for the game.

@xianc78 @beardalaxy
Water Temple is a bit slow and clunky, but it's not all that bad.

@ArdainianRight @xianc78 yeah there was a time when everyone was like "ocarina of time is the best game ever" but then it started shifting to "actually ocarina of time isn't that good and here's why" and now we're back to "ocarina of time is a masterpiece."

people complaining about the water temple probably haven't played the game in a very long time. it's not that difficult. as someone who didn't play water temple until i was an adult, i didn't really have any issues with it. it was on master quest though so maybe it makes it easier in a roundabout way somehow idk.

i will say though that a lot of people do think majora's mask is better for one reason or another. i personally haven't ever been able to get into it because i don't like the time mechanic.

as far as navi goes, she's a bit annoying, but i think hating her and also hating the water temple are a bit of a meme at this point and not really a big deal in the game itself. relatively, the low health beeping sound is far more annoying lol.

@beardalaxy @xianc78
Master Quest Water Temple is drastically different and arguably easier.

@ArdainianRight @xianc78 huh, interesting! i had a much harder time with the forest temple lol.
