I'm a little late to this, but I feel the need to mention it because I feel like these people are just going to move to Telegram, if they already haven't.

Telegram is NOT a better alternative to Discord. It asks for your phone number (huge red flag), lies about being end-to-end encrypted (encryption is done server-side), is centralized, and not entirely FOSS (server-side software is closed source). Look into decentralized/self-hosted solutions instead.

I personally recommend hosting an XMPP server. Install an XMPP server stack that supports multi-user-chats and host your discussions there. With XMPP, you can sign up for an account on any server and talk to anyone, including people from other servers. There are even modernized web-clients like Movim which make it more user friendly.

For private/direct messages, you can also end-to-end encrypt them using OMEMO. Just don't use them for public MUCs or you will end up having problems. You really don't need to encrypt a public chat anyway.

If you need help running an XMPP server, Mental Outlaw made a video on it.

Really, even an IRC channel or an AJAX webchat/shoutbox is better than Discord or Telegram.

@xianc78 xmpp and other free/libre solutions is too hard for regular users
How many ex-discord user is able to host their own server? How many of them at least able to register on public one?
Telegram is used by plenty of users, and pretty much usable
E2E have only secret chats (thus the mame), it is known thing. Better than whatsapp's "so e2e that you can use desktop client when phone offline"

@me We just need at least one public XMPP server that is user friendly and allows users to host MUCs, as well as being free-speech friendly. Not everyone needs to host their own servers, but enough people.

@xianc78 even having public xmpp server wont do much. People wont go on other platforms if their friends wont. Their friends wont go, because someone dont wanna go on other platform. You will find at least one person who wont bother, because they have nothing to hide. And this will become yet another messenger with questionable benefits
Matrix has public servers, is it helps? No. Matrix has acceptable out-of-the-box experience, is it helps? No. Matrix has acceptable clients, is it helps? No. Then why are you think that something can help xmpp, that abandoned by majority of users?

@me Just wait until Telegram pulls a Gab and starts banning servers they don't like.

@xianc78 from 10 years experience, you should really try hard to got banned on telegram
