I'm reading an old book and I saw "Google Desktop" mentioned. Looked it up and it's just as horrific as it sounds.

@RustyCrab I used it to play flash games on the desktop as a kid because I was too dumb to realize that you can download any SWF file and load them in a blank HTML document.

@xianc78 would that actually work offline or does it still need to dynamically pull stuff?

@RustyCrab I can't remember. I assume it was still online. Google Gadgets were just glorified iframes IIRC.

@RustyCrab @xianc78 Depends on the game. Some had online features, some would dynamically load assets to not bloat swf filesize, I think Flashpoint does some local webserver trickery to get those working.

Newgrounds had different loaders that did or didn't work offline (presumably fetching assets in the background or something). It's been long-enough that I barely remember though and I wasn't so good with software back then.
