Hot take: I think more FOSS projects should go the Ardour business model and charge people for binaries. You'd be surprised to see how many people don't know how to compile from source or that they could legally get a binary for free from a mirror (provided that there is one).
You may think that this sounds scummy, but who cares? I think it's better than just simply relying on donations. This guarantees that at least some people will pay for the software because until someone redistributes it, the only way to get the latest release is to pay for the binary.

@sendpaws Ardour's binaries aren't exempt from any FOSS license. You just have to pay to download them if you choose to get them from their website.
