@xianc78 wait until you try to make an actual retro homebrew and realize every single piece of pixel art, "low poly" model, or chiptune aren't anywhere within the actual technical constraints of the original hardware.
@crunklord420 @xianc78 doesnt this just give you an opportunity to discover ways on your own like the old developers did?
@ctr @xianc78 it usually involves me crushing down whatever assets I'm using. I've gotten better at 3D and pixel art over the last few years, but I still can't crack writing music.
@crunklord420 @ctr @xianc78 also on older platforms with era sdks/tools you didn't get trackers either
You had to literally write out text files or use other weird ways to compose
@PurpCat @ctr @xianc78 you gotta write your own sound engine for old consoles to actively drive the synthesizer chip in real time. Game engines were not very common in 8/16-bit game consoles, but sound engines were. Most famously GEMS for the Genesis. You'd have to upload a Z80 program from the ROM, through the m68k CPU onto the Z80 CPU that would run the Yamaha chip. Kinda like how you have to upload shader code at runtime to GPUs these days.
@crunklord420 @xianc78 I wonder how many "retro" games that exist today is actually retro enough to run on actually super old/weak hardware and isn't isn't some skinwalker on Unity engine, etc.

@dedmos @crunklord420 Retro City Rampage, but that is literally an NES ROM running in an emulator.

@xianc78 @crunklord420 lol, expected that one as the answer, but I doubt there will be more

@Pawlicker @crunklord420 @dedmos Yes, but I'm pretty sure it's also just emulating the NES ROM.

@Pawlicker @dedmos @xianc78 Xeno Crisis is also a modern commercial Genesis homebrew.
@xianc78 The problem is, they couldn't tell you how to make traditional pixel art, because the latter works best on CRTs
