Do you remember when it used to be cool to have 4 slim GPUs in one PC?
Now, you have 4 GPUs packed into one fat box instead.
@TornadoOfTerror
I have considered buying a new GPU, and then I found, that without changing my power source, there is no way...
So, I better wait for an entire new PC at that point.
@TornadoOfTerror
Huh?
I don't have one. I have a job :D
@TornadoOfTerror
Also, the game I'm playing right now does not use polygons :D
@TornadoOfTerror
Excuse the joke. I wanted to say, that my current PC is more then enough, and by the time I'll need a new one, I will be able to throw money at it.
@LukeAlmighty
It almost feels like Nvidia is trolling people at this point. Also, I wonder if we're quickly approaching a time when the GPU is the "motherboard", and the rest of the PC is an add-on card.
@alyx
No, this is trolling.

One company is selling these cards with a "support stick"
@LukeAlmighty
I saw it. It's amazing that something that was a gimmick until last generation, is now a mainstream thing.

>1kw
He wasn't that far off. The real one is around 400w isn't it?
@TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears
We're gonna need a bigger case... RTX 4090 size comparison
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IOBFl5SQVM
This is worse then I thought...
@LukeAlmighty @TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @Cleanears
I've been starting to thing about the whole external GPU thing. Maybe instead of a fad for laptops, maybe more work should be done on the interface and make it a legitimate standard. I think we've reached the point where it would save us space for desktops.
@alyx @TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @Cleanears
You mean 2 desktops. one for CPU, disks etc and 2nd one for GPU and 2nd power source.
@LukeAlmighty @TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @Cleanears
Basically. But each PSU would be smaller, cause you won't need 1000w for CPU and mainboard.
@TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears
It's funny, that we live in the same age, whre modern graphics cards eat 450 W, while a 45W deck can play all the games anyway.
Yes, I know, that these cards are not for gaming, but it seems, that separation of gaming and industrial graphics cards is inevitable at this point.
@TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears
And yes, I know it's not a fair comparasion, but that's kinda my point.
@raptor @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @LukeAlmighty @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror
>you can't cheat physics
this unfortunately.
@raptor @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror
Even for semi-modern games like GTA-V it can manage 60 FPS at high setting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlDX2fWQ-OU
I do tend to set low details and 30 FPS for sake of battery, but the power is there.
@raptor @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror
Ok, you can hate all you can, but:
1) any games that came after 360 are shit anyway.
2) I am seriously happy I bought it. That point cannot be argued.
@Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
Objective analysis is, that it handeled every game I tried.
@Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
Although, yes....
There are some games, that are not optimalized for portable gaming.
For instance, MonsterHunter world was obviously trying to squeeze in all the power it got, so that is a first game, that I marked for myself as "nah, I'm good"
@Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
Do you really expect me to argue levels of details?
Ok, Steam deck is not powerful enough to do full ray-tracing to get that one pixel from FFAC05 to more correct FFAC06.
I don't care about details, when I can play GTA V in bed.
@Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
The point is invalid, because it does not apply.
I am saying, that most of the power GPUs eat are wasted on modern gaming.
And I think, that this exact thesis is proven by experience on the Deck.
@Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
So, by question is this:
What game can you think of, that SERIOUSLY NEEDS that additional power, and reduced details would ruin the experience?
@Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @alyx @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
Nah, I play rise, and it's a better game in every way.
@LukeAlmighty @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
Considering in the old times I've managed to play Crysis, mostly low, at 20-30 fps and still have fun, I do admit that it's hard to completely ruin the experience with low settings. But I've also seen cases, like turning shaders down in StarCraft II, where the difference is much too big to want to do it for the extra framerate.
@LukeAlmighty @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
>that most of the power GPUs eat are wasted
There is some truth to that. A lot of the "ultra" settings on modern games are placebo crap, that use a lot more power for no noticeable difference. With textures, for example, the highest tier settings is usually an uncompressed/unoptimized version of the same textures of the immediate lower tier setting. Same resolution, no visible difference in game, but one gives you that sweet placebo.
@Zerglingman @Kagekokoro @LukeAlmighty @Cleanears @TornadoOfTerror @raptor
The only way the Deck isn't portable is if you have small girly child hands. If Linus Gabriel Sebastian can handle that thing, so can everyone else.
@LukeAlmighty @TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @Cleanears
What resolution does the deck play those games at? What framerate? What graphical settings? Would you play with the same resolution, framerate and settings on a modern monitor or TV, something that is over 24" in size?
@TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @LukeAlmighty @Cleanears
APUs have their place, but they'll never replace dedicated GPUs as the top speck gaming machine, ever. You'd probably need dies even larger than a Threadripper to squeeze in the die a CPU and an integrated GPU powerful enough to tackle a nvidia card, but then you simply wouldn't have the cooling hardware to deal with it.
@TornadoOfTerror @Kagekokoro @Zerglingman @LukeAlmighty @Cleanears
Maybe there's some architecture paradigm that needs changing in the GPU space too, like how ARM can be so much more efficient than x86, maybe there's something obvious the GPU space is missing too.
I do agree though, the "progress" nvidia has done these last 2 generations is stupid.
Remember, when this video was a joke?
