@corfiot @LukeAlmighty @SpurgAnon sort of. rather than starting by distinguishing "types" of marriages I'm starting from the other end. observing that people living together inevitably results in very similar social ills regardless of the specifics of those people. domestic violence still happens. financial dependence sill happens. betrayal of trust still happens. hospital visits and power of attorney and etc all still happen

of course there's a religious concept of marriage. but in terms of a secular government that doesn't get involved in religious matters, the various social ills exist and I see marriage of the bureaucratic sort as existing to address them

as an aside I also see religious marriage as appearing to have the same general purpose. but that's a separate topic. the government has no business being involved in religious traditions imo

obviously anything specific to the presence of children won't inherently apply here without further context. and regarding children, society might well want to incentivize certain things. but I see this as "in addition to" all the other stuff

I am referencing it to the extent that I feel it is relevant context but I don't think anything I've said depends on it

if you have an objection to something I've said perhaps address that head on instead of seeking procedural issues with the conversation (trying to label religious marriage as somehow off limits or dogmatically irrelevant)

here you go putting words in my mouth again. I don' think I specifically made that comparison. I pointed out various social ills that commonly arise when people live together. I pointed out that people frequently backstab after making a commitment. society presumably has an interest in not getting stuck with the bill from such things

you are the one apparently trying to steer the conversation towards these additional distinctions that don't seem to have anything to do with the points that I've made
