The reason they can't market towards kids is not because the gaming market has become big, but because the growth potential for advertising to kids is too small. There are no kids. Society is broken and no one is having kids. Even suggesting to a woman to have children is now in the best case scenario taboo, in the worst case scenario is considered misogyny worthy of a prison sentence. The only "children" women want to take care of are illegal immigrants from some god forsaken hell whole, who are also adults.
So the only market that exists and keeps having a reliable potential for growth, not just in gaming, but in entertainment as a whole, is adults. And this might also be what has caused media to be stuck in this remake era. They keep playing on adult's nostalgia, instead of making something that children of today might like.

A lot of parents would spoil their kids to hell and back with games and consoles, because they've been gamers themselves at some point in their lives. But when there's simply not enough children to begin with, and political leaders are salivating at the idea of importing more human beings, like cattle, than babies being made... It's simply a better investment for companies to focus on adults.
Case example: you're Valve and want to do research on a new gamepad or joystick.
Is it a better idea to focus your research on how children hold a gamepad, when your birth rate is predicted to keep dropping, and nobody even wants to fix it (and there's enough conspiracy theories that elites work to make it drop more)?
Or should you do your research on adults, since you know politicians insist that we will import more and more adult human cattle, at least until the end of the century?
In the first case, your research is less and less relevant as time goes on, but in the second case, the research remains useful and pays dividends for a long time.

???
Even if the TFR is only one per woman, this means 10%-12% are children. That is not "nothing".
That only adults remain as a growth market is correct, but the remake era is NOT bc they are old. It's plain laziness. Whole new genres and free time occupations as money machines were invented in the 20th century - for adults.

Never forget, that kids have launch money, while millenials are bored at meeting, wondering how to spend their money.
