@beardalaxy Unstoppable. I wouldn't mind some games, like Smash or Mario Kart, to be rolling release instead of having to remake the game every time. Nowadays it's not like we're missing out on improved graphics.

the game is already so fuckin good, easily the best mario kart imo. i will certainly take more of a good thing rather than risk getting a new thing that isn't as good.

The only thing I have to complain about is that the new tracks and characters won't see a physical release but that's an industry wide problem and not something to dump just at Nintendo's feet. I have the same problem with Xenoblade Chronicle 3's DLC along with just about every other non-AAA game.

True. Every once in a while we get a surprise like Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Country but that is incredibly rare and a thing of the past sadly.

I mean, there is a small chance that mk8 gets another physical release with all of the content once it's done, since it's not out yet entirely. Maybe alongside whatever the next iteration of the switch is.
I totally forgot that a lot of games used to have "complete collection" editions that came with all the DLC too. The issue is that games barely fit on discs anymore and some of them flat out aren't even using them these days.

I have very low hopes that they'll release a new version and even lower hopes that they'll follow in the Switch form factor for their next generation console. Nintendo is well known for being retarded and following insanely successful consoles up with trash fires. They've already said they don't plan on following the Switch up with another hybrid portable/home console. Maybe they'll change their minds and release something like a Steam Deck/Aya Neo/GPD Win/ROG Ally/whatever other handheld PC instead of whatever they have in mind. The market is clearly clamoring for handhelds, we have waited all our lives to get handhelds that can play AAA games on the go and Nintendo would be retarded to ignore that but they have done even dumber things.
It's 50/50 on whether the "Complete Collection/Remaster/Ultimate/whatever" edition of games gets released physically. I wish they'd keep releasing games on disc but they make more money by letting Sony/Microsoft/Valve host the game digitally.
The reason it takes multiple disc's now is partially due to them not compressing the game files very well if at all. There was a recent AAA game, I want to say it was The Last of Us but it may have been something else, that when released on PC got tons of shit for an insanely huge download. When people finally finished the download they noticed that NOTHING in the game files had been compressed. Not the cutscenes, not the music, nothing at all. Even with that though they could still fit most games on a single disc if they wanted to.
They make blank 100GB blu ray discs, called BDXL, that are available to the public for $10 per blank disc. They could be had more cheaply by game developers if they truly wanted their massive game to be on one disc. The problem is they don't want people to have physical copies, they claim it stops piracy, and don't want to spend the extra couple of bucks to press games.

@SapientPearwood @Rasterman @beardalaxy Well, the Mario Kart 8 DLC did end up becoming part of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's base physical version. I'm sure at least some of the current DLC tracks will be part of Mario Kart 9 on the Switch 2, I just don't know how many of them (I assume most, if not all these new ones WILL make it tho).

If memory serves Torna got a physical release from the beginning, didn't it? I could swear I remember being surprised by physical editions in stores day 1 and being mad I bought it digitally. Maybe in crazy though.

@beardalaxy Yeah, imagine they make a new Mario Kart now. People would be reasonable to expect it to have every feature MK8 had; but it doesn't sound realistic, knowing what we expect.

@Rasterman @beardalaxy To be fair, I'm slightly relieved they stopped with the new Smash Ultimate characters before they did something REALLY stupid, like adding Tracer or a Soyny character. Sora being the dumbest character added isn't that bad overall.

I'm not sure we need to worry about that; but infinite DLC with someone who gives a shit at the helm (like Sakurai, despite his Sora ball-washing) would mean we get reasonably good content. @beardalaxy @Rasterman I haven't followed competitive Smash much the last year, but I do know that Steve is the best character in the game, and broken (fuck all those faggots who spent so much time whining about Pyra/Mythra, who's not even a top 3 character). That said, Sora is also boring as hell to watch most of the time, and Sonic is more cancerous than either of them (I hope Sonix forever ruins his hands and is forced to retire).

@beardalaxy @Rasterman I just wish the new tracks were visually consistent with the base game tracks, on some of them you can really tell that they were just ripped from a mobile game.

@Rasterman @Blouie @beardalaxy The first update didn't actually make the DLC tracks available for regular online play, either because of an oversight, or to prevent people from doing what you're doing. They did give up on that fairly quickly tho.

@beardalaxy @Rasterman The MK8 engine is excellent, and the graphics are still among the best on the Switch. The problem is that the number of brand new tracks will always be limited when it's DLC-only, whereas a Mario Kart 9 would AT LEAST have boasted 16 brand new tracks, more likely something like 24 new ones, given the new standards set by recent entries.

They save that kind of scumminess for the mobile games, Mario Kart Tour is apparently really vile, and Fire Emblem Heroes has also gotten quite nasty in terms of Pay To Win/Pay for features that SHOULD be part of the base game.

@beardalaxy @Rasterman They could have put in a bit more effort into the textures of the mobile tracks, but the devs were working dring covid so that makes sense why they're not as good.
@justnormalkorean @rasterman honestly i never cared about the graphics of the tracks, they look fine to me. i care WAY more about the track layouts, of which most are pretty good and i like the way the tour tracks change with each lap.
@Rasterman @beardalaxy I'm still mad they stopped with the Mario Maker 2 DLC so quickly. Sure, it was all free, which was actually pretty damn admirable (the base game already improved plenty on its predecessor) but I'd have paid good money for something like a Mario Galaxy mode.
