Which is why I'm pretty sure Elon Musk is secretly an ancap and wants his Mars colony independent from any government. However, lemme hand you a blackpill prediction: the Mars colony would go similarly to how the Dutch colony in South Africa went: first the Mars colonists will settle down and fight some spear-wielding Native Martians and everything will be OK. Then, China, Russia or the US government will settle a few kilometres nearby and it will all be OK. Then, one day they'll go "you are a part of our region, 'mkay?" And if the Martian colony refuses, there will be a war and the government will have more resources to win and *bang*, the Elon Musk statue in Elon Square gets toppled like Saddam's was in Iraq.

@judgedread I think I saw something similar in The Matrix. It backfired; but anyway, the colony would have to dispose all their trash to space in order to generate enough crap to protect the atmosphere. This sounds less feasible than a Death Star.

@rasterman You don't understand any of the basic concepts involved. Junk does not mean trash in this context, it is an analogy to the accidental pollution of Earth orbit.

@judgedread I'd say that I don't care I'm not familiar with whatever Star Trek stuff you are saying, but then again, we're talking about a hypothetical colony on Mars, so I'm a willing participant in inviting make-believe into the conversation.

OK, whatever. Let's wait and see how Elon Musk protects his Mars city.
