I just found out that there is an open-source implementation of A Link to The Past on PC.

This Link to The Past PC Port is amazing. It runs real smoothly and supports XInput controllers. It's probably the best port out there. I'm surprised that it isn't as well known.

@beardalaxy I don't think this was done via decompilation since the original game was written in assembly (which is not portable). So it isn't technically a port. It still requires an original ROM to abstract the assets though.

@beardalaxy The author said he used the ALTTP disassembly and wrote corresponding C code.

@xianc78 yeah I saw it recently, I didn't even fucking know, nobody talked about it

Any good mods for it yet?

@coolboymew I don't know. It requires the original ROM obviously. Apparently, you can replace the MIDI music with MP3s, but I haven't tried it. It also works on Switch.

@xianc78 nice, I always wanted to replace the church music with All Star by Smash Mouth
I might try it out. I've never finished a Zelda game yet. I have an unfinished save on my 3DS and I got super bored with Breath of the Wild. I started Ocarina of Time on UltraHLE in high school and never finished it either.

I just got through a second play through of Fire Emblem so I should probably go back to BOTW just to finish it and say I've beat .. one Zelda game.
do it for me, anon. I too, have never finished a zelda game. I always always get bored and walk away. My name is Chika Fujiwara and I am a horrible person.
I might. I need to put up more game reviews:

Also, I'm not anon .. this is my public account; you can totally find my real name 'n shit .. for better and for (mostly) worse.

I haven't been playing much lately. I have a four game draft I need to just finish up and publish before the end of the month. I have a bunch of "games that suck" that might hate play this winter just to get reviews up so I have a bunch in the 20% ~ 30% range.
oh, shit that's badass I had no idea you did this! <3

@djsumdog @coolboymew Link's Awakening doesn't take too long to beat. It's the one I recommend to newcomers.

I might try that out next. Have you played Ittle Dew? That’s a really fun indie game that’s very Link inspired. The first one is really good; second one not so much (insanely hard)

@djsumdog @xianc78 @coolboymew ittle dew is the mascot of the people who made nick all stars brawl and slap city if i'm not mistaken

@djsumdog @xianc78 @coolboymew the first zelda game i ever "beat" was wind waker but i skipped the triforce quest entirely. the first time i did it for real was with skyward sword in like 2015.

@xianc78 @coolboymew

Wasn't aware of this project. IMO A Link to the Past is probably my 2nd favorite zelda game with Link's Awakening being my personal favorite. Awhile back I managed to get my hands on an uncommon French-Canadian NTSC variant of the game. It's honestly just a rip of the French PAL rom but runs at 60hz. Would say it's one of my more unique games in my collection. Though the only thing that bugs me is in the French version of A link to the past they refer to the Master Sword as Excalibur where in the later Zelda games it was translated to L'épée maîtresse. The Chris Houlihan secret room is also renamed to «ma pièce la plus secrète»
@ooignignoktoo @xianc78 I prefer the French Kirby Adventure that's exclusive to Québec and released nowhere else
@coolboymew @xianc78

I've played a rom of the Québec version of Kirby's Adventure. That game taught me quite a few vocabulary words in the process of playing it. Learned the words for spark «étincelle» and UFO «ovni» through playing the game. The game itself is fun too and imo a real swan song of the NES and what it's hardware is capable of. Wario's Woods was a real lack luster final NES game.

If I remember correctly there was a french canadian release of Links Awakening too. I haven't seen that one in the wild but I got my hands on a super cheap europe french copy for $10 back in 2017.
@coolboymew @xianc78

The french links awakening is kinda cool in that it has a version exclusive song easter egg «LOLO song» Apparently LOLO was a name of the french translator. And the trade quest with the mermaid has you look for her bikini instead of a necklace in the US version. If you dive underwater when the mermaid doesn't have her bikini in the french version she calls you a pervert. Where in the US version there is no dialog and she disappears
@coolboymew @xianc78

Yeah Nintendo censored the US english version for the mermaid quest by removing the dialgoue of the mermaid if you dive under water. NoA thought that the sexual reference / content was not family friendly and removed it from the US release.

Where Nintendo of Canada and NoE for the French version felt it was acceptable and didn't remove it.
@coolboymew @xianc78

I've yet to play the switch remake but the original Game Boy game holds an extreme amount of nostalgia and sentiments for me. I had the DX version growing up and then my cart stopped working and I lost it. I got another copy though very happy to have this game in my collection and one of the few games I own multiple copies and physical variants of.
@coolboymew @xianc78

Apparently the German version of links awakening is the most unique because some of the translation / dialogue is a bit questionable. and it has the unique Moyse easter egg. Apparently Nintendo of Europe was not happy with how Moyse handled the translation and he didn't do any future translation work for NoE lol
